Sand bags – The Best Tool For Flood Defence

Executive Summary about Sand Bags by Mychael Todd

More recently woven polypropylene sand bags have been introduced and are proving more effective for certain operations involving these flood defense sand bags.

Sand is by far the easiest and most effective material for filling and shaping sand bags. In a time of flooding the rain also helps to saturate from the rain and also makes the bags heavier.

Sand bags can be used to:

  • Prevent overtopping levees
  • Stacking sand bags by home gates and doors can greatly diminish flood damage

It is commonly thought that sand bags should be built as a wall to completely block water, this is a misunderstanding.

It is possible to completely block water, but this requires enough time to construct a pyramid styled wall many sandbags thick. This takes time and the very nature of flooding means that people rarely have time to prepare.

The force of the water can be so great it is much more advisable to quickly build a much thinner wall with the aim of redirecting the flow of the water away from the location being targeted by the water flow.

Sand bags – Limitations

  1. Sand bags will not seal out water.
  2. Sand bags deteriorate when exposed for several months to continued wetting and drying. If bags are placed too early, they may not be effective when needed. If it is necessary that bags remain durable for a longer time, the addition of cement can increase effective life.
  3. Sand bags are basically for low-flow protection (up to two feet). Protection from high flow requires a permanent type of structure.

It is important to place the bags with the folded top of the bag in the upstream or uphill direction to prevent the bags from opening when water runs by them.

Another burlap kind is burlap cloth. Common uses for burlap cloth include tree wrapping and frost protection, agricultural packaging, sculpting, scenery and decoration, upholstery and carpet backing, restoration, seeding, and ground erosion protection.

Some of burlap bags having a polyethylene plastic liner which is secured only at the mouth of the bag by a single line of thermoplastic adhesive which may be reactivated positioned about the interior edge of the mouth, with the seams of the bag on the inside.

Now, burlap bags are also sometimes used as sandbags. They are usually made from jute or other natural fibers, although modern sacks are often made from polypropylene.
